PLDT-Smart Foundation partners with women's group to provide face masks, PPEs to frontliners

PLDT-Smart Foundation (PSF), in partnership with the Kababaihan, Kamay ng Kalikasan (KKK), recently distributed over 36,000 protective face masks to frontliners from various organizations and communities to help augment the supply of face masks - necessities in the continuing fight against the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Some 500 sets of personal protective equipment (PPE) were also donated to the following facilities: Novaliches Hospital, Sta. Ana Hospital, National Center for Mental Health, San Lazaro Hospital, and Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital.

Among the recipients of the face masks were the AFP frontliners, Makati Medical Center Foundation for PNP HPG, and various communities affected by COVID-19.

"It is an honor for us to help our beloved frontliners by equipping them with the basic necessities, such as face masks and PPEs, to protect them in their battle against COVID-19," said PSF President Ma. Esther O. Santos.

"We would like to assure our frontliners that we are here for them and one with them in fighting this pandemic," Santos said.

"If every Filipino will wear a face mask, observe physical distancing and practice proper hygiene, we will all have some protection from COVID-19," KKK Founder and Commissioner at Philippine Commission on Women, Sandy Sanchez Montano pointed out.

"We are glad to provide reusable, non-woven protective masks produced by women who were severely affected by the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) due to the pandemic," Montano added.

The KKK is a program under the Community Health Education Emergency Rescue Services Corp. (CHEERS). It aims to actively help in addressing the spread of COVID-19 while providing a source of sustainable livelihood for women who need to make a living for their families. KKK participants/beneficiaries include women-recipients of 4Ps, solo parents, and those who were affected by the ECQ.

No matter what we do and what we’re into, one thing that’s a must for everyone from all walks of life is the need for everyday hydration. The risks and dangers of dehydration, especially in a tropical climate such as the Philippines, are all too real—which is why we need to constantly hydrate.

This was done in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), University of the Philippines Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development and Your 200 Pesos which is a project that aims to feed families affected by the pandemic. Experts Urge Public To Take a Closer Look at Drinking Water

Health experts reveal that it is not enough that the water you drink looks clean to the naked eye. Your water should also be proven clean through lab tests, to avoid common water bourne diseases, such as cholera, dysentery, and gastroenteritis. Unfiltered water also has many potential contaminants, such as chlorine, heavy metals and allergens, as well as parasites.

Despite this, keep in mind that water is also important in everyday hydration. A document released by the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition cites hydration as a key to supporting the body’s ability to fight the COVID-19 virus and support the immune system, recommending 2-4 ounces of clear liquid beverages every 15 minutes.

“Keeping properly hydrated at a time like this refreshes our bodies and keeps the virus away,” said Dr. Sybil R. Bravo, a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital and a member of the Blood-Bourne Infectious Diseases Core Team.

Health experts around the world continue to stress the need for proper hydration, along with getting enough sleep and proper handwashing, as the best ways to ward off the COVID-19 virus. However, access to safe and clean water continues to be a challenge. There are many harmful substances and minerals in unpurified water, and not all bottled water in the market is the same

Finding clean water that undergoes stringent purification processes to filter harmful substances and minerals means checking the purification process of which it undergoes. Some follow stricter and more stringent global processes to ensure that they are truly clean. Wilkins Pure, one of the water brands of The Coca-Cola Company, is certain to be clean and pure. With international certifications under its belt, Wilkins Pure goes through an advanced, seven-step purification process, which help assure that the water you drink purifies the body of toxins.

Pru Life UK launches Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home to promote financial literacy among Filipino families

Pru Life UK has launched “Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home” online resources to help and encourage Filipino parents to teach key money management concepts to their children at home. This initiative was developed by Prudence Foundation, the community investment arm of Prudential in Asia and Africa.

Designed for children aged between seven and 12, the “Cha-Ching Kid$ At Home” materials guide parents on teaching key money management concepts – Earn, Save, Spend and Donate – in an interactive and engaging way. Based on the Cha-Ching curriculum, each guide directs parents to a relevant Cha-Ching music video, key topics for discussion, and activities to help their children put learning into practice. The parent guides are downloadable for free on the Cha-Ching website and can be viewed online or printed out.

In addition to the parents’ guide, Prudence Foundation is also rolling out Cha-Ching daily challenges, which include activities or discussion pointers, posted on the website every weekday of June. Each challenge takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, aiming to encourage parents to incorporate discussions around money with their children as part of their daily life.

The guides are in English and will soon be translated into Filipino versions.

“We noticed that the global COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the ways children learn and interact with their parents, and we understand the important role that parents play in promoting continued learning of their children. Through providing fun and engaging ‘Cha-Ching Kid$ at Home’ materials, Prudence Foundation aims to promote discussions around responsible money management skills among families in the region. This initiative is particularly relevant and important as many schools across the Philippines remain closed due to the pandemic,” said Prudence Foundation Executive Director Marc Fancy.

Meanwhile, the Cha-Ching website also contains a resource center where teachers can easily access the digitized version of the Cha-Ching curriculum teaching materials for self-study or review. Educators can simply log onto the Teacher section of the Cha-Ching website to download the Cha-Ching curriculum’s master list of teaching aids, session implementation video guides, music videos, and comic books on their personal electronic devices. Cha-Ching teachers can also freely equip themselves with materials of the in-class and take-home activities that they can repurpose for their students.

This initiative will help expand the reach of Cha-Ching across the Philippines and promote money-smart knowledge among students.

Cha-Ching is a financial literacy program designed for children aged seven to 12. It aims to instill the knowledge, tools and practices needed to help a child become financially responsible.

Cha-Ching is created as a series of music videos and comic books developed by Prudence Foundation in partnership with Cartoon Network, and Dr. Alice Wilder, a renowned education specialist. The program comprises a structured school curriculum incorporating activity-based learning and has been rolled out in Asia with Junior Achievement, one of the world’s largest youth-serving non-government organizations. The Cha-Ching Curriculum is currently being implemented in schools across Asia and Africa.
